Driving Change Through Community and Values-Based Investing
In the latest episode of Dollars & Change: The Expert’s Guide to Sustainable & Responsible Investing, host Peter Krull sat down with Andy Kaufman, Chief Investment Officer at Community Capital Management (CCM), at the Future Proof Citywide Conference in Miami Beach, Florida. Their inspiring discussion focused on the evolving landscape of community investing, the role of creativity and intentionality in finance, and the future of impact investing.
Andy began the conversation by sharing his unexpected path into Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) investing and how it ignited his passion for merging Wall Street expertise with socially responsible outcomes. From his early days at BlackRock to leading treasury operations at a South Florida bank, Andy’s exposure to CRA requirements opened his eyes to the power of capital to drive societal good while maintaining strong financial returns. Today, he oversees CCM’s $6.5 billion in assets at CCM, where he helped CCM expand from a CRA-focused asset manager to a leader in impact investing. 60% of CCM’s assets under management (AUM) consist of institutional investors, which shows the growing recognition of financial performance and positive community outcomes.
The conversation explored innovative approaches to investment, such as creative ways to apply data and technology. CCM has adapted the strategy of analyzing all investments to ensure they provide solid returns while supporting communities and sustainability. “Each bond is a story,” Andy emphasized.
Andy and Pete also touched on critical and emerging challenges, such as climate risk, “climate gentrification,” and the evolving role of insurance within vulnerable areas like South Florida. Andy believes that innovation, such as advanced building materials and evolving societal norms around capital deployment, is the driving force behind the next frontier of impact investing and addressing these crises. Despite the challenges, he expressed hope, backed by the momentum of human ingenuity, capital flow, and growing technological advancements like rapidly improving electric vehicle infrastructure and renewable energy products.
At the close of the episode, Peter and Andy emphasized relationships, connections, and storytelling for investments and communities. Andy believes that asset managers need to tie investments to meaningful narratives to best engage with clients and create lasting change.
